Lashes Make Everything Better! Eyelash Extensions 101 March 23, 2022

There is nothing quite like waking up each morning, getting ready for the day, and walking out the door with perfect lashes. Between the busy lives we live, meetings, and being on the go with our families, there are many benefits to investing in eyelash extensions; after all, that is what most women want to have: longer, fuller, and more fluttery eyelashes. Many women struggle to find a lash mascara that adds volume or find there to be extreme difficulty in applying strip lashes. For the first time, more women are trying lash extensions, but let’s be honest, it comes with a price tag.

In the beauty industry today, eyelash extensions are a multi-billion dollar industry that is expected to increase at a faster rate than most, with an annual rate of 6%, according to Grand View Research, INC. [1] While lashes became a booming trend that took the world by storm two decades ago… What makes eyelash extensions such a successful trend? Why are they worth it? We are going to break down everything you need to know about lashes.

What Are Lash Extensions?

Lash extensions are semi-permanent, synthetic, faux mink or silk fibers that are applied to each eyelash with a specially formulated non-irritating glue to enhance your eye shape. Here at the Salon Professional Academy of Appleton, we use the well-trusted and nationally recognized E’lan Lashes. As a well-established eyelash manufacturer and educator, E’lan Lashes takes pride in providing a superior eyelash extension product based on years of extensive research and analysis. As part of the E’lan family, all of our students receive over a decade of experience with the curriculum that is published in Milady’s Advanced Aesthetic textbook and a wide range of eyelash extension training, starting from the basics to the most advanced techniques in Classic lashes.[2]

What’s the Application Process Like for Eyelash Extensions?

While typically 80-140 individual lashes are applied to each eye, however, every person is a little different. The Student Lash Tech will carefully apply one lash extension at a time to the natural lash; they use a specially-formulated, semi-permanent glue that will not irritate or damage the natural lash, never on the lid. While the exact process varies from salon to salon, here’s what you can expect from our students:

  • Consultation: When you first arrive, you can expect your student lash tech to sit down with you and go over all the risks, talk about the do’s and don’ts of the appointment, and talk about what to expect after your appointment is concluded.
  • Eye Mapping: Your student lash tech will start the process by lash mapping. This includes the student lash tech helping you determine, based on your eye shape, the best look, length, and placement of lashes for each person. We offer a natural, cat-eye, open-eye, and dramatic look for each taste and need.
  • Cleansing the Eye Area: Your student lash tech will begin by having you lie down and ensure that you are in a comfortable position. Then, they will cleanse the area to remove any makeup, oil, and germs from the area.

    • Applying the Tape and Eye Gels: Plan on carving out about 2-3 hours for a full set of lashes and about 1-2 hours for your 2- and 3-week applications. Keep in mind your eyes will remain closed for the duration of the process. To prep for the actual application, your student lash tech will apply an under-eye gel to your lower lash line to keep your lower lashes out of the way and provide a bright solid background to work against (it’s easier to see your lashes against a crisp white background than natural skin). Then, the eye gels will be secured with medical-grade tape on both sides of the eye (this tape doesn’t touch your lashes, and it doesn’t hurt once it’s removed later).

    • Application: Using tweezers, your student lash artist will dip the end of each extension in the lash glue and then apply it to your lash. The application isn’t painful; although you may feel anxious having tweezers operate so close to your eyes while they’re closed, rest assured that our students are trained and skilled in applying eyelashes. {All services are provided by students under the supervision of licensed professionals}.
    • Drying: The lash glue dries very quickly, but your lash tech will likely have you sit for around 10 minutes once all of the extensions have been applied. Some student lash techs like to point a small, handheld fan at your extensions to speed up the drying time, while others prefer to let the glue air dry. During this stage, your eyes are still closed. Your student lash tech will also apply a sealant that will help them remain in place.

    • Removing the Tape and Gels: Once your lashes are completely dry, your student lash tech will remove the under-eye gels and tape (this doesn’t hurt at all, but let your student lash tech know if you tend to experience sensitivity in this area so they can extra gentle). Once removed, your student lash tech will likely brush through the lashes with a spooly, then you’ll be asked to slowly blink your eyes open. Voila! This will complete the service!

How Do You Make Lash Extensions Last?

    • Your student lash tech will give you a take-home sheet that lists out how to carefully care for your lashes while you are at home to ensure that you get the most time out of those beautiful new applied lashes.
